No Summer Camps for Music? Have Your Kids Make their Own!

What if you empowered your kids to create their own groups?

We would be more than happy to help lead them and train them in how to rehearse a group and work with them on the material in our lessons. Oh that would be so much fun and you could do so many cool things! Various different groups, whatever you have in mind, rock, pop, chamber or extra, jazz! Let your imagination run wild! You could meet every afternoon at one of your homes or even in a local park! And then put on a little yard concert at the end of the summer!

We’re here to help you do that, totally! Let’s rock!

Improvisation is not Just a Huge Part of Jazz and Music, but Life

Improvisation is not just a huge part of jazz and music, but life.
The students in our JazzLab are so good, so fun to work with, and learning so much! Yesterday was a unique situation with two key players (bass and piano) out for different reasons. But everyone showed up and did a great job of improvising not just in terms of improvising over chord changes but as instrumentalists and musicians in a group with a need to make some on the spot changes to arrangements and such!

Songwriting in Action

Do Young Musicians Still Listen to Music?

Listening to great music is such a significant part of learning to be a great musician, I would say it’s almost impossible to make great expressive music without it. And regardless of the kind of music we make or desire to make, we are all a part of a tradition, a history, and a current community of music, I would suggest that to honor that tradition, we have a certain obligation to listen and know what others great musicians have done and are doing.

Audition Champions

Years ago, long before COVID, we had an annual event called Celebration of the Scales. It was a lot of fun. This is kind of like COS 2.0, even better, and involving more music, more fun, and more learning experience! Celebration of the Scales was an opportunity for students to come and demonstrate their hard work in learning their scales before their peers, the TIA community, and the rest of the TIA faculty. We had pizza and had a great time. Audition Champions takes this to the next level to include the sorts of things a musician would experience in an audition: Sight reading and a prepared piece or two. Students will take the mock audition on stage in front of their peers, in a fun and casual environment as always with TIA, and afterwards they will get encouraging feedback from us, we will all have pizza, and have a great time!

Trust the scales, Practice scales, Take the wins

Scales can be a big win for you, that’s one of the reasons they’re so important. Just yesterday I had a great example experience of why scales are so important with a wonderful student, and not for the reasons that You might think! Yeah we extol the virtues of scales all the time because honestly there are so many virtues to learning scales and theory that we could do it forever.

But one of the reasons that scales are so important that I think a lot of people miss, is that scales are a big win for you!

Piano is a Great Foundation

“Piano is a great foundation. It’s an awesome instrument and it’s a ton of fun. Once you learn how to play it can be a lifelong discipline, relationship, community builder, and source of joy and inspiration. It can of course legitimately also be a source of income for you as well if that’s something you really want to do.

Scales and Theory Matter, Get the Foundation

While it may be conceivable to create some good sounding music in both of those situations without necessarily knowing all your scales, the reality is it would be extremely time consuming and likely involve a lot of wrong notes that don’t sound good first, because you would be exploring those keys and trying to figure out what works over those chords—and you definitely don’t want to be playing those less than choice sounding notes over the chords in a rehearsal or in the recording studio!

Summer Vacation Instead of Music?

I made a lot of friends. I played a lot of music. Yes, a lot of it was also hard work, and I don’t regret any of it. As a matter of fact, I looked forward to those summers every year. Did I go on summer vacations? Nope. And I bummed about it? Not at all. Do I feel like I missed out or was left out? Not one bit. I think my summers were meaningful, memory making, life shaping, and fun. I am still friends with some of the musicians that I met!

Music is a Journey

It’s so important to understand that a student who isn’t practicing regularly, a student that isn’t investing the time you want into their music or their instrument, is not necessarily a student that’s not learning and not growing. If they’re showing up on a weekly basis and they have a great teacher (and we can assure you of that part), they are learning.

Music isn’t an Instant Joy and Excitement for Everyone but it is Worth the Wait

We often hear parents say things like oh, I’m not sure if my child will like music. Or yeah, he tried it and I’m not sure he’s really that into it. Here’s something to think about, there’s a good chance that your child or teen may not be that into music in the beginning, and it may take some time. Letting them drop out or just withdrawing them from lessons, band, or orchestra altogether, may mean missing a lifetime worth of joy and happiness, wonderful experiences, friends! Career opportunities! If you want to start your music journey, we are here to walk with you Olympia! Drop us a line!

THANK YOU Moms and Dads

Here’s to all the moms and dads that enroll their kids in music lessons, and keep them in lessons, bringing them every week, even (and especially) when their kids don’t practice. THANK YOU! Your commitment to your child or teen and their development is awesome, and it will have a lifelong payout! We can’t stress enough how music lessons are SO much more than music. Yes, of course, we love music and music is beautiful, and fun, and challenging, and hard work, and wonder, and can bring so much joy—and those of us that teach love all those things! And of course we hope that every music student will experience all of those things and love it! But some don’t, and that’s OK.

Music Can Save Your Kids

You’d be amazed at how many people I have spoken with who share a similar story. They studied music as children and teens. They graduated high school.  After high school instead of pursuing music as a career, they did something else-pursued some other career. But then, after getting into their career, maybe even after college and years of career pursuits, they woke up one day and said, I need to be doing music.

Music Lessons as a Self-Care

One of the cool things about [learning music] as an option is that if you learned to play an instrument, if you’re learning to play music, not only are you engaging in some great self-care during those lessons, but you can continue to engage in that same self-care act any day that you want to, and anytime that you want to throughout the week and in between your lessons! That’s actually something most people probably don’t get from other forms of healthcare. Of course, we could and would all benefit from practically and intentionally pursuing out some of the things we talk with our therapists outside of therapy, but do we? Honestly there may be a greater chance that we might be willing to sit down at the piano or pick guitar.

Music lessons are Therapy

For so many of our students, music lessons are therapy. And we’re here for that! Just the other day I had a student telling me how much it just felt good to sit down and play their instrument. And for this student, that’s a big deal because there’s a lot of things that unfortunately don’t feel good, and that’s true of course for a lot of people. But I am so thankful that our wonderful students can sit down and play their instrument and find happiness in it, find solace in it, find peace in it.

Avoid the Summer Slide!

But should motivate them to practice and keep them working on their craft and their instrument this summer! JazzLab for students with serious experience, high School level or above. Jazz101 for students who have been playing maybe only for a year or two, but another instrument well enough and can read at a basic level to begin learning the art of jazz.

New Learning with JazzLab

One of the things I think is amazing from an educational standpoint and growth of these musicians, is that many of these songs have countless chords changing rapidly from one key to the next, requiring students know not just every key, but various different tonalities utilizing mixolydian, dorian, locrian, as well as of course major, natural minor (aeolian) and harmonic minor as well. While it is possible that some musicians could learn tunes like this, most of them would likely take hours of listening and practicing and learning these things by ear. On the other hand, a musician that knows these tonalities, knows how to read these chords, knows how to understand chord scale theory, can experiment and play over such chord changes on the spot. That’s what we’re here for! To teach people how to do that! Among other things.

Practice: Quality over Quantity

. “My students often ask me “how long should I practice for?” To me, the answer is more complex than the student may expect. You wouldn’t ask “how long should I do my math homework for?” Other classes will assign specific goals, such as a number of workbook exercises, and a student will spend as much time as it takes to complete them! I’ve always been an advocate for “quality practice over quantity practice” In other words, my short answer to this student is that five focused minutes is always better than thirty distracted minutes.”

Communicating Magic in Music

As students are preparing a wide array of music right now, I encourage each of you to keep that magic in mind. It can be tough if you feel like you barely even know what notes to play, but it’s never too early to find that spark. One of my favorite questions to ask myself as I practice is “what do I love when I listen to or play this piece, and how can I play it in such a way that communicates that to others?” That’s the mindset that Weir championed in her career, and connected her to audiences worldwide for decades. For us, I believe that practicing this way moves us ever closer to that magic we love about music, not to mention, it makes practicing more fun!

Darn the Dream: Transcription

Transcription is really important for musicians for so many reasons. We need to learn how to interpret rhythm, and notating what we here is monumental for growth in that area, especially if we want to be able to improvise over song form. Learning how the masters craft a phrase, approach chords, and develop a solo are essential as well. One of the questions we always need to be asking ourselves is, what do we want to sound like? Analyzing the sound of one of the greats is a wonderful way to learn what it can sound like to improvise over a song form.

Affordability and quality do not have to be at odds with each other

Affordability and quality do not have to be at odds with each other. Call us crazy, but we believe that part of being a non-profit with a primary mission of serving the community means making our services affordable and available. You will find our tuition rates to be in fact generally $20-40 less than that of other options in town with qualified (or less than qualified) faculty. And with TIA, you are supporting a local 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Why are the Modes Important?

Modes have noticeably distinct sounds and feels which make it fun, interesting, sometimes even exotic sounding. This unique nature, sound, and feel alone is enough of a reason to make the modes worthy of study, because without a proper understanding of them musicians that have learned only their foundational 48 will often accidentally play natural minor instead of Dorian, or major when they should be playing Lydian, etc. For piano and guitar players, the modes are also quite useful in that learning them requires the pianist to learn new fingering patterns that will help with more complex melodic lines as they learn more challenging repertoire.

The Arts Portfolio

music is so important, and not just for those that will go on to major or even study music in college. Many of the finest universities in the world see musical education, skill, and ability as just one of the many unique personal and character pieces that students bring to the table. Stanford University for example practices what they call “holistic admission” where “Each piece in an application is part of an integrated and comprehensive whole.” Read their explanation here. Nursing music education, creativity, and passion is not only right for your child (and yourself), but it may also provide an important competitive edge in today’s growing competitive world. . If you, your child, or someone you know is considering college or university study and are not yet working with someone—we would love to work with you at TIA. If you haven’t yet, you might check out Stanford’s program.

Learning to Make Your Own New Ending

Sometimes musicians may need to cut a piece they have been working on short. It could be because they are slated to play their piece for an event, but it is too long for their allotted timeslot. Maybe they are working on an accompaniment piece to accompany a vocalist or a group, and the vocalist or group has decided not to play the whole piece for whatever reason.
Other times it may be a more frustrating reason. Sometimes no matter how hard you work on your music; you just might not be ready to present the whole thing. This can and has happened to some of the best and most disciplined musicians. Don’t hate yourself for it. Don’t punish yourself. By all means, do not throw the piece out as a waste or whatever. Look at this as an opportunity to practice how you might handle one of the scenarios above.

If you or someone you know is paying $100 a month for lessons, your teacher better be highly qualified (with degrees from a major conservatory or university) or an extremely professional equivalent. They also better be equipping you with the fundamentals in scales, theory, technique, sight reading, and repertoire. If not, get a new teacher.

In a Rut?

In a rut? Talk to your teacher, or give me a call. I would be happy to chat about it. And let’s set some goals to get you out of it! One of the best reasons to be in private lessons is that a skilled musician and experienced teacher will notice things in your musical development that you won’t. They are a second and more objective set of eyes and ears. They can always help you find new directions to move in, new concepts to learn, and new fun to be had.

All New Piano Lab!

We are looking to upgrade our piano lab and we are super excited about it! Our piano lab currently serves 11 classes a week (that’s around 50 students or so)! And our keyboards and stands have helped up very well considering! They are functional, fun, and effective.

But some are beginning to wobble a bit, and we have so many students moving beyond the beginner stage to needing more keys (full size keyboards) and pedals!

These digital pianos are full size, have pedals, weighted keys, and will be so much more fun for students to play! They will also be able to play in a standard position on a bench (we will need to get those as well).

Would you consider helping us with the upgrade? Any gift would help. Just click the “Support us” button on our website.
