You know in this part of the country, it’s sad, but for probably a myriad of reasons, we just don’t see the whole music camp thing the way we did when I was young. A lot of marching bands still have a summer band camp, usually around the end of the summer to prepare for their upcoming school year, but other than that you don’t see a lot of music camps, and I wish we did. We’ve actually tried to put some together here that we’ve looked at as possibilities, but we’re so busy all summer long. It would be really difficult. It would require putting everything else on hold for several weeks and I would hate to do that.
There is a jazz camp in Port Townsend (Centrum Jazz Festival and Camp) which I have not been to since I was pre-college so I can’t speak to how it is today. I’ve heard mixed reviews. There are some amazing people there for sure, I know that. But other than that, I don’t know if many camps around here today.
And while that is a bummer, I will say that if your kids are involved in lessons or small group classes here, they’re getting what they need in a large part. If they aren’t in small group classes, of course they’re not getting that group experience which is super fun and extremely valuable, but here’s a thought:
What if you empowered your kids to create their own groups?
We would be more than happy to help lead them and train them in how to rehearse a group and work with them on the material in our lessons. Oh that would be so much fun and you could do so many cool things! Various different groups, whatever you have in mind, rock, pop, chamber or extra, jazz! Let your imagination run wild! You could meet every afternoon at one of your homes or even in a local park! And then put on a little yard concert at the end of the summer!
