One of the things I’ve always found fascinating is when people say something like “yeah, I just don’t think my kid really needs music because they don’t want to be a musician.” And they will follow that up with saying things like “you know, this isn’t something they’re going to do after school or as an adult.” And that could be true. However, I will say that I’ve seen many, many people as adults in their twenties, thirties, forties, and even into their eighties, that never became musicians in the professional sense of the word still play music and do it well and with passion! By the way, that is a terrible way to define whether or not someone is a musician.
I have seen young people with careers in fashion, comedy, cosmetology, engineering, sit down at their instrument and make some beautiful music having not studied music formally in probably 10-15 years or longer, but one thing these young people all have in common is that they did study music at some point in their life. They studied music formally, and so the foundation that they have is so strong, that they are still able to pick up their instrument or sit down at their instrument and make some music and have a great time!
That music still matters to them. That music still brings them Joy. And that makes me happy. I’ve seen people in their ’70s and ’80s being a part of a band, choir, or orchestra, even doing live events in their community instead of just sitting around on the couch watching TV. That’s awesome! That’s life breathing that is stimulating, and joy giving. And again, one thing all these people have in common is, they don’t just happen to sing or play, they studied music at some point. They built the foundation.
Does every child that learns science end up becoming a scientist? Is every child that learns math going to become a mathematician? Of course not! But you know what, I’ve seen people get excited about programming and utilizing their math skills they’ve learned in school as a young person or maybe even, or maybe a middle-aged or older individual getting excited about becoming a home brewer or something like that, and putting that science to work, because he wants to do something creative, productive, and fun.
Music can be a part of every life, even if it isn’t the main thing. Learning music isn’t just about now. It’s about life. If you are looking to make music a part of your life, the life of your child, or your teen in Olympia, we’re here for you!
